School Vision Screening
20/20 is Not Enough!
Being able to see small letters on a distant vision chart or a blackboard does not predict whether children can use their eyes efficiently during close centered reading and schoolwork.
A much better school vision screening method is the Visual Efficiency Rating, or VERA. VERA is designed to be administered by school nurses, and contains a routine vision screening as well as specialized tests of eye teaming, focusing and tracking skills. Dr. Gallaway conducted a large recent study that showed VERA to be very effective in detecting these problems in a school setting. Schools are starting to use VERA with very promising results, but more widespread use of VERA would prevent many children’s vision problems from being undetected. 20/20 is not nearly enough when it comes to the visual skills needed for reading and schoolwork.
